How well does Hydroxyzine work?
Hydroxyzine is below average for atopic dermatitis "Other Non-Steroid Prescription Medication" treatments.
What is the evidence behind Hydroxyzine?
Hydroxyzine is effective at reducing itching (pruritus) in atopic dermatitis, with significant itch suppression lasting up to 24 hours after taking the medication. The best itch control (over 85% reduction) occurs between 2-12 hours after taking the medicine.
What does the research say?
Study Summary

Hydroxyzine effectively reduced itching in children with severe eczema, with over 85% reduction in itching from 2-12 hours after taking the medicine. A lower dose (0.7 mg/kg three times daily) was just as effective as a higher dose (1.4 mg/kg) but caused less drowsiness.

Pharmacokinetics and antipruritic effects of hydroxyzine in children with atopic dermatitis
Study Type
Clinical Trial
Studied Population
Total Patients: 12
Severity: severe
Age: children (mean 6.1 ± 4.6 years)
Results
Lower dose (0.7 mg/kg) was as effective as higher dose (1.4 mg/kg) with less sedation

What are other patients saying?
The medication can reduce daily symptoms of atopic dermatitis by about 38%, which is similar to other antihistamines like loratadine.
What does the research say?
Study Summary

Hydroxyzine reduced symptoms by 38% in patients with atopic dermatitis, but caused significant drowsiness in 40% of patients. The medication was as effective as loratadine but had more side effects.

Relative efficacy and safety of loratadine, hydroxyzine, and placebo in chronic idiopathic urticaria and atopic dermatitis
Study Type
Clinical Trial
Studied Population
Total Patients: 41
Severity: not available
Age: 18-65
Results
Both medications reduced symptoms more than placebo, with loratadine showing better efficacy

What are other patients saying?
The main side effect is drowsiness/sedation, which is more common with hydroxyzine compared to newer antihistamines. In one study, 40% of patients on hydroxyzine reported feeling sleepy, compared to only 5% on loratadine.

Is Hydroxyzine Right For Me?

Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine medication that helps relieve itching and anxiety. It's commonly used to treat allergic conditions and can help with sleep.
Hydroxyzine might be right for you if:
  • You have itching due to allergic conditions like chronic hives or atopic dermatitis

  • You need relief from anxiety related to your skin condition

  • You are not in early pregnancy

  • You do not have a heart condition called prolonged QT interval

  • You are not allergic to hydroxyzine, cetirizine, or levocetirizine

Hydroxyzine works by blocking histamine, a substance in your body that causes allergic symptoms like itching. It also has calming effects on the brain, which helps reduce anxiety and promote sleep.
Hydroxyzine can be used in children. The dosage depends on the child's age: Children under 6 years can take 50 mg daily in divided doses, while children over 6 years can take 50-100 mg daily in divided doses.
Elderly patients can use hydroxyzine but should start at lower doses and be monitored closely. Older adults may be more sensitive to side effects like confusion and excessive sedation. The doctor should be careful with dosing because elderly patients often have decreased liver, kidney, or heart function.
Hydroxyzine is contraindicated (should not be used) in early pregnancy. Studies in animals have shown it can cause birth defects at doses much higher than those used in humans. There isn't enough data to confirm its safety during pregnancy in humans.
