How well does Vtama work?
Vtama is about average for atopic dermatitis "Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor–Modulating Agent" treatments.
What is the evidence behind Vtama?
Tapinarof cream 1% applied once daily was effective in treating moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in both adults and children as young as 2 years old. In clinical trials, 45-46% of patients achieved clear or almost clear skin after 8 weeks of treatment compared to 14-18% with vehicle (placebo) cream.

  • Vtama working magic for eczema itch
    Sept. 3, 2024
I've had eczema on some spots on my hands and toe a few other places for a decade+ now, constantly going in and out of flare ups. Tried steroid creams (Betamethozole, Fluocinonide) and non-steroidals (Tacrolimus) but they only seemed to work after 2+ weeks of constant 3-times-a-day applications with wrapping. They didn't really get rid of the itching until near the end of the two weeks, and within two weeks of stopping use the patches would come right back if I even itched it for 5 seconds, restarting the endless cycle. I even tried the injections in which they needle a steroid into the patch, which was faster acting but 1) hurt like hell getting it done and 2) also only lasted 2 or so weeks before issues came back. Anyway the dermatologist gave me samples of Vtama and some other one to try, and I have to say I'm shocked my Vtama. It's the only cream in which the itching stops basically immediately after I apply it to my hands or toe, like goddamn magic. This is despite me reading reviews on how it can actually cause itching, though that was for people with psoriasis I think. It did take a bit to get my skin layer thinned out back to normal, which I think helps Vtama absorb better and consistently keep the itch away everyday. Although I did cheat on occasion early on some days and apply it twice, just for the instant itch relief. Apparent the drug is expensive as hell and I just started the process of having a specialty pharmacy figure out a price, so we'll see. But as my eczema areas are smallish and not too widespread, spending a lot for a tube that will last me half a year and possibly permanently end the eczema feels like it'll be worth it. Thought I'd share.
  • Latest eczema treatment options
    June 12, 2024
What is your experience or thoughts on some of the newer eczema treatments coming onto the market or in the process of being approved? Examples I'm thinking of are biologics, JAK inhibitors and non steroid topicals - Rinvoq, Adbry, Dupixent, VTAMA (tapinarof). The most exciting one seems to be VTAMA which is due to be approved by the FDA in Q4 2024. Seems like we have come a long way from steroid only treatment options 5 years ago. Seems like there is hope!
  • Im happy but it’s not gonna last long..
    Dec. 27, 2024
I’m using the primecorlimus cream 1% on my cheeks and it basically vanished my contact dermatitis and red inflamed skin I had on my cheeks. I’m happy but I know like once I stop using it it might come back. So it just depressing because what even is the point and it’s not like I can use this cream forever :/
The medication provided rapid itch relief, with improvements seen as early as 24 hours after the first application. By week 8, about 31-33% of patients achieved minimal to no itch compared to 14-17% with vehicle cream.

  • Tapinarof/VTAMA 1% cream
    Aug. 7, 2024
I’ve been through pretty much most steroid and non steroid creams throughout the past year. I’m on dupixent currently and my derm prescribed me Tapinarof to help with facial flares since dupixent isn’t really helping in that area at all. Anyone have experience with this cream and any positives/negatives? I did some research and it seems fairly new so not much history posted on Reddit yet.
  • Need help with mouth
    Nov. 10, 2024
Hi, I’ve been struggling with eczema for all my life, but around a few years ago, the skin around my mouth has become thickened into like a crust and dry skin and it has really irritated me, something like angular cheilitis. I’ve been going from doctor to doctor about possible treatments and none of them worked. I’ve tried dupixent, steroids, prescribed creams like opzelura and vtama. I also use aquaphor daily. None of them worked. They’ve checked for my skin to see if there was a fungal infection but there wasn’t. Is there anything that has worked for you guys on this issue?
Tapinarof was well-tolerated across all age groups and skin types. The most common side effects were mild to moderate and included folliculitis (hair follicle inflammation), headache, and nasopharyngitis (common cold). Very few patients (less than 2%) had to stop treatment due to side effects.

  • Vtama?
    Oct. 31, 2023
Has anyone else been prescribed vtama? I was just prescribed it by my derm and was wondering if anyone has any experiences with it. I know it’s fairly new but I haven’t seen a lot of talk about it so I’m curious.
  • Nummular eczema
    June 23, 2024
Hey guys, so I recently got diagnosed with nummular eczema. I had a big spot on the side of my foot which I got the biopsy. I started to get some in between my legs and then spread to my stomach as well as breasts and back. I’ve became really insecure. I’ve been using vtama which has helped also moisturizing with Larosche posay. Any tips on how to deal with flare ups? Also is it normal to get the eczema on my private area that itches?

  • Starting VTAMA cream
    Jan. 10, 2025
Finally received VTAMA from my doctor, I will update and let you all know if it helps over the next couple weeks/months. My doctor sent the prescription to a "specialty pharmacy" in town that only cost me $35 due to a manufacturer discount/coupon. Otherwise the price with my insurance at CVS was over $1K for one tube of it.
  • Eczema and maple tree allergy
    May 13, 2024
So my son, who is 3, has had a severe case of eczema since he was 9 months old. We’ve gone through allergy testing, and staying clear from his allergens, plus a shot of dupixent every 4 weeks, and Vtama daily has cleared his skin to what I consider 90% (he still has some patches but we celebrate what small wins we have). I have a weird question. He’s allergic to maple trees. Would he also be allergic to maple syrup? His allergist said probably not, but he (my son) has a pretty severe sunflower seed allergy that we deal with daily (apparently sunflower seed oil is in a LOT of products). His skin has been clear from flare ups for 2 months now and I don’t want another to happen. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had a maple allergy that has made their eczema flare.

Is Vtama Right For Me?

Tapinarof (VTAMA) is a cream medication that you apply to your skin once daily. It belongs to a class of medications called aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonists.
Vtama might be right for you if:
  • You are 2 years of age or older

  • You have atopic dermatitis

  • You can use it with or without other treatments

Tapinarof works by activating something called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) in your skin. While the exact way it helps with atopic dermatitis isn't fully understood, this interaction helps reduce inflammation in your skin.
Tapinarof is safe and effective for children 2 years of age and older. Children might experience more upper respiratory tract infections and ear infections compared to adults. It has not been tested in children younger than 2 years old.
Tapinarof is safe for elderly patients. Clinical trials included patients 65 years and older, and there were no differences in how well it worked or its safety compared to younger adults.
There isn't enough information to know if tapinarof is safe during pregnancy. Animal studies didn't show major concerns at normal doses, but you should discuss the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.
It's unknown if tapinarof passes into human breast milk, though animal studies suggest it might. Talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits of breastfeeding and potential risks of using tapinarof while breastfeeding.
